Bright flowers bloom on the bodice, sleeves and hem of this vintage embroidered peasant dress. The embroidery work is amazing, the back looks as good as the front. I might cry when this leaves my clutches.
Condition excellent, but we recommend cleaning as there are a few surface scuff marks on the dress, no stains.
Unlined and pulls on over the head with no fasteners or closures. 'Elasticized' smocking at neckline, waist and sleeve 'cuffs'. I put quotes around 'elasticized' because it is actually the hand-stitching of the minute puckers that elasticizes the fabric, amazing!
The fabric is semi-sheer but not see through like chiffon would be. It feels like cotton or cotton blend. The embroidery and smocking are hand stitched. The seams and hem panel are machine sewn.
Please note: There has been some debate about the origins of this dress whether that be Hungary or Mexico. In looking at the details you can see that the embroidery, smocking and crochet trim were all done by hand and whether those hands were in Mexico or Hungary, they laid each stitch thoughtfully and intentionally, the workmanship is stunning front to back, dimensional and colorful. A lot of love went into this dress, truly one of my favorite embroidered pieces I've acquired and priced with the workmanship forefront in my mind.
